Identification of Acrobat Ants

Acrobat ants (Crematogaster species) are commonly known for their unique heart-shaped abdomens, which they can raise above their heads when threatened—hence the name "acrobat." These ants are found worldwide, including in the United States, where they often inhabit outdoor areas but can become a nuisance indoors. They range in color from light brown to black and are about 2.5 to 4 mm in length.

Behavior and Habitat

  • Nesting Habits: Acrobat ants often nest outdoors in soil, under rocks, in tree stumps, or rotting wood. Indoors may nest inside walls, insulation, or damaged wood, especially if moisture or decay is present.
  • Diet: They primarily feed on sweets, proteins, and honeydew produced by aphids. They may forage into homes for sugary or protein-rich foods.
  • Defensive Posture: When disturbed, they raise their abdomen over their head as a defensive mechanism, which can also release a foul-smelling odor.

Why Ants Are a Problem

Although most ants are not harmful to humans, they can become a significant nuisance when they invade homes in large numbers. Acrobat ants don't typically nest in homes, but they can use damp or damaged wood in your home as a food source. Colonies are typically small and have one queen; however, some may have thousands of members.

How Ants Enter Homes

Acrobat ants can quickly enter homes through cracks in foundations, gaps around windows and doors, and openings around plumbing or utility lines. Once inside, they'll nest in hidden areas and seek food sources. Because they can move between indoor and outdoor nests, controlling these ants often requires addressing both the inside and outside of your home.

Ozane Termite & Pest Control offers effective seasonal pest control that controls acrobat ants and prevents them from returning year-round.
