Identification of Acrobat Ants

Acrobat ants (Crematogaster species) are commonly known for their unique heart-shaped abdomens, which they can raise above their heads when threatened—hence the name "acrobat." These ants are found worldwide, including in the United States, where they often inhabit outdoor areas but can become a nuisance indoors. They range in color from light brown to black and are about 2.5 to 4 mm in length.

• Nesting Habits: Acrobat ants often nest outdoors in soil, under rocks, in tree stumps, or rotting wood. Indoors may nest inside walls, insulation, or damaged wood, especially if moisture or decay is present.
