Latin Name: Polistes fuscatus

What Are Paper Wasps?

Paper wasps, often recognized by their slender bodies, long legs, and distinctively narrow waists, are a common sight in warmer months. Their name comes from the papery material they use to construct their distinctive umbrella-shaped nests, which they build in sheltered spots like under eaves, decks, or in sheds. They can range in color from brown with yellow markings to a more vibrant reddish-orange, depending on the species.

Here's why you may want to avoid having paper wasps around:

  1. Stings and Aggression: Paper wasps are generally non-aggressive if left undisturbed but can become defensive and sting if they feel their nest is threatened. Their sting is painful and can cause severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, making them particularly risky to have near homes or areas where people frequently gather.

  2. Nest Locations: They often build nests close to human activity, such as around doorways, on porches, or under railings. This proximity increases the chances of accidental encounters, especially if they establish a nest unnoticed in a high-traffic area.

  3. Repetitive Nesting Habits: Even if a nest is removed, paper wasps have a tendency to return to the same areas year after year. Removing one nest doesn't guarantee they won't try to rebuild nearby, which means they may become a recurring issue.

  4. Threat to Other Insects: While paper wasps do help control certain pest populations, they are also known to prey on beneficial insects, like caterpillars and pollinators. Their impact on these populations can be negative for gardens and ecosystems if they're present in large numbers.

  5. Structural Damage: In rare cases, wasps may chew through wood to access spaces in walls or attics. Although they don't cause extensive damage like termites, their presence can be a nuisance in certain situations, especially in structures where they've nested in walls or attic areas.

To manage paper wasps, it's best to keep an eye out for their early nesting activity in spring. Removing small nests early on can prevent a larger problem.
